Why it happened

Following Israel's 1948 creation, Iraqi persecution intensified into oppression and discrimination,1 epitomized by the hanging of Jewish businessman Shafiq Adas in Basra in September 1948;2 in March 1950 Baghdad legalized Jewish emigration for those renouncing their citizenship.3

The migration

The 1941 Farhud , in which more than 180 Jews were killed,4 foreshadowed the community's end, yet large-scale emigration accelerated only in 1950–1951.3 The March 1950 denaturalization law permitted Jews to leave if they renounced their citizenship.3 Between April 1950 and June 1951 a wave of Baghdad bombings against Jewish targets spread panic and swelled registration—nearly 86,000 had signed up by January 19513—with many Iraqi Jews blaming Zionist agents for the attacks.1 On 10 March 1951 the authorities froze the assets of all departing Jews.2 Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, named for the biblical leaders who led Jews back from Babylonian exile,5 airlifted emigrants via Cyprus from mid-May 1951.3 Between 120,000 and 130,000 Iraqi Jews—about 75% of the community—reached Israel,11 leaving only some 6,000 behind1 and effectively ending a community descended from the Babylonian exile.5

Genetic corroboration

  • autosomal (genome-wide SNP arrays)Genome-wide data place sampled Iraqi Jews within the subcluster shared by most Jewish populations, overlying Druze and Cypriot samples,6 and trace substantial ancestry in most communities to the Levant.6 These results do not characterize the political meaning of the 1951 airlift.
