Scope and information you provide

The Jewish Diaspora is a public, informational atlas. It has no visitor accounts, payment flow, comment form, newsletter, or contact form. The site does not ask you to submit your name, email address, postal address, payment information, or other account information.

This policy applies to this website only. It does not cover a cited publication, archive, DOI resolver, or any other third-party site you choose to visit from an external link.

Information collected automatically

Google Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to measure visits and interactions. Google Analytics may process the page URL and title, referring page, approximate location, browser and device information, session statistics, and on-site activity. Google states that Analytics uses an IP address during collection to derive location information and then discards it before the address is logged or stored.

The Google tag may set first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_<container-id> to distinguish visitors and preserve session state. Google documents a default expiration of up to two years, subject to browser limits and the settings of the Analytics property. This site does not ask visitors for a user ID and its code does not send names or email addresses to Google Analytics.

Vercel Web Analytics

The site also uses Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate traffic statistics. Vercel says this service does not use third-party cookies or collect identifiers that track a visitor across websites. Data points may include the requested page, referrer, timestamp, broad geographic area, browser, operating system, and device type. Vercel says its temporary visitor-identification hash is discarded after 24 hours and is not tied to an IP address in the analytics report.

Hosting and security records

Vercel hosts and delivers the site. Like other web-hosting and security services, its infrastructure may process request data needed to serve and protect the site, such as an IP address, requested path, timestamp, user-agent string, and security signals. These records are separate from the aggregate Vercel Web Analytics described above.

How information is used

Automatically collected information is used to:

  • understand aggregate readership and which atlas pages are useful;
  • diagnose performance, availability, and compatibility problems;
  • protect the site from abuse, automated attacks, and security threats; and
  • improve the atlas and prioritize maintenance.

The atlas does not run advertising, build named visitor profiles, or use visitor information to make credit, employment, housing, insurance, or other eligibility decisions.

Sharing and retention

Information is processed by Google and Vercel as service providers and may also be disclosed when required by law or necessary to protect the site and its users. The atlas does not sell or rent visitor information.

Analytics and hosting records are retained according to the applicable provider settings and policies. Retention periods can differ by data type; aggregate reports may remain after visitor-level or event-level records expire. Google and Vercel may process information in countries other than the country from which you visit, subject to their terms and transfer safeguards.

Your privacy choices

You can delete or block cookies through your browser, use a content blocker, or use Google’s Analytics opt-out add-on. Blocking analytics does not prevent you from reading the atlas, although browser settings that disable all site data or scripts may affect some interactive features.

Depending on where you live, privacy law may provide rights concerning access, deletion, correction, restriction, or objection. Because the atlas has no accounts and does not maintain a visitor directory, it may not be possible to associate aggregate analytics with a particular person without collecting more identifying information. The provider policies above explain their available privacy request processes.

Children’s privacy

The atlas is a general-audience educational resource and is not directed to children under 13. It does not knowingly solicit personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when the site’s features, service providers, or legal obligations change. A revised version will be posted at this URL with a new “Last updated” date.
